"If you follow all the prescriptions of checking your privilege, unpacking your invisible knapsack, centering the marginalized, and excavating your deeply held white supremacist notions, you will absolutely positively have to break up with actual white people.

"You will love many of those white people. You will be related to some of them. You will, one day, be faced with seeing “whiteness” not in ideas but in people."

@bright_helpings This is something I've been thinking about a lot over the last year. The links and foundations that everyday life is built on - culture, technology, products, politics... A hugely diverse history, present, future, so omnipresent in everything that happens, and yet so ... ignored, taken for granted.

@scribe Yours is still really high-minded and abstract language for something that's about specific relationships with specific people in our lives that are bad for our anti-racism work even as they feel beneficial for us, because we white people think that we can separate race from our personal interactions with others.

@bright_helpings Yeah I was following the original tone of the quote 🙃 Day to day, I'm gradually getting more involved in supporting and promoting globally diverse writers, and reading more history to learn. I'm also figuring out where I sit in it all, as a half-caste.

I think "love" is the key word for me though. Open up the love, respect the links we all have, make people aware of them all.

@bright_helpings oof not even white and I've had to break up with multiple wp over racism. They were online friends & acquaintances though, can't imagine how much harder it is to go through that with colleagues, friends, even family.

@ljwrites Oh yeah BIPOC might have to break up with people like this too, I just wanted to flag it as reading for white people because we, unlike BIPOC peeps, probably don't know that this is even a possibility, never mind something we're called upon to do. I feel like my BIPOC friends know that already.

@bright_helpings yeah it's a series of hard choices for many BIPOC, especially those who have personal ties to white people and/or whose resources and support depend on relationships with white people. For white people to come face-to-face with that choice is... a necessary and positive development in some ways, but it must be quite something.

@ljwrites Yeah, not to be too simplistic about it but a lot of white people, unlike BIPOC, have only white family. And it's all too easy for us to have only white friends and colleagues. I know my family is blatantly happy to further white supremacy but at least I can and do mostly ignore them all. The possibility, much less the necessity, of having to Throw Away the Whole Support Network must be a very hard thing to contemplate.

@bright_helpings @ljwrites there’s also a fair bit of friction in the form of “I already risked this when I stopped hiding my queerness and/or transness, you mean I’ve got to go through it all *again?!*”

and … yeah, you do have to. and this time there’s no brand new community waiting with open arms on the other side, and nothing to gain but a moral debt bigger than everything you’ve ever done with your life. but the alternative is letting them turn you back into one of them.

@mxsparks @bright_helpings not to mention, given queer communities' issues with racism themselves, you may end up having to cut off parts of your newfound community :/
