Clothing - Ecology & Economy #sewing
Some brands are starting to work on this, but I don't think relying on brands is the answer. I've decided to go with linen, hemp and wool clothes I sew myself. I was worried about going off of techno-fabrics for bike riding, but so far linen and wool is working well. I know sewing isn't an option for a lot of people, but if you want to seize the means of production for yourself it's fun! Stay tuned for toots on economies of pre-Industrial clothes.

@britvulcan are you allergic to wool? What kinds of things would you sew if you picked it up?
Clothing - Ecology & Economy #sewing
@ewankeep I'm allergic to elastics.. so probably historical dress modified for modern life basically.

@ewankeep unfortunately the thing i'd want to do the most is a bra replacement/stays/corsets which are high precision items. and i'm not skilled at all yet. (sigh) it's a thing to work up to.

@britvulcan ooh, elastic is hard to avoid, all right. Sounds like a not fun allergy. Bras and corsets aren't anything I've made. They are high skill for sure. I know a local guy named Felix Needleworthy who makes corsets and other historical garb. He does fine work and might be open for comissions. Part of the reason Spouse and I are doing early medieval is so we don't need to make corsets, lol. There are plenty of tutorials on you tube and patterns to buy.
Clothing - Ecology & Economy #sewing, latex allergies
@ewankeep yeah, it's the kind of thing where like i get skin welts/rashes. but it's more of a chemical burn type thing than like an anti-histamine reactive thing. I'm allergic to the latex/rubber type things, so i've found elastics that are LESS reactive, but many are still low key uncomfortable.
Interested in doing stays commissions to see if it's worth it as a solution tho. And if so, MAYBE learning the skills to make it myself eventually

@britvulcan Those rashes sound bad. I hope you find a good solution. It looks like Felix has Renaissance bodices for sale. I'm not entirely sure of the differences between bodices, stays and corsets? He's a nice guy and may be able to answer questions and point you in the right direction if he can't help you personally. If you talk to him, tell him Brixia (my SCA name) sent you.

@ewankeep regency stays tho...hmmm. the bralette seen here seems doable even for a beginner.

@ewankeep cool pattern shop: https://reconstructinghistory.com/shop/

@britvulcan I've seen this pattern shop. They do have some cool things! I follow costumer Abby Cox on you tube. She has done some excellent videos on stays, corsets and things. She (used to ?) work at American Duchess, which mostly does historical shoes, but they have stay and bodice patterns.

@britvulcan Spouse likes the Prosperously bellied gent's Edwardian patterns. Nice. Hmm...and I have been thinking about some plus fours for bicycling.

@ewankeep I have been very tempted to go this route for allergy reasons tbh
