There are a handful of books that I have recycled rather than tried to sell or donate to the library. Usually it's because I find the subject matter or the author reprehensible.

Joseph Campbell's "The Hero With a Thousand Faces": The mono-myth is shitty storytelling, and while it gave us Star Wars and Runequest it's just bad racist scholarship that needs to be stopped.

Hi there just a reminder that american spirits are trash and use native american imagery to sell their product, its no different than Red Man Tobacco, or land o lakes, or any of the huge brands that use our face. American spirit use our image and try to present as being cultural, but they are mass marketted, mass produced colonized white mans tobacco. The dude who came up with the concept was a piece of shit and knew that by using native representation that itd appear more primal, cultural, and "traditional", but its honestly not any different than marlboro or lucky strike or camel or any of the bullshit thats giving people cancer and contributing to polluted waterways (cig butts are one of the most polluted things on earth.) This is coming from a native who used to smoke them, and i know a lot of natives who do as well, but like gah, cmon

Very interesting.

"University of Rochester researchers, inspired by diving bell spiders and rafts of fire ants, have created a metallic structure that is so water repellent, it refuses to sink—no matter how often it is forced into water or how much it is damaged or punctured."

Interesting article from Science about a historical prohibition that forbade Christians from marrying anyone more closely related than their third cousin gave rise to Western civilisation as we know it.

it's a history of how indigenous and black families were systemically pushed out of southwest minneapolis, sometimes as a result of white supremacist violence. there's a reason it looks like it does.

Some of y'all have got to be good at #leather maintenance right? My beloved jacket has sustained minor damage. What, if anything, should I do to fix it?

ok here we go, a thread of some great books by POC that i've read or am in the process of reading and very much enjoying :boost_ok:

@Shutsumon If you want an ancient and unusual sounding language something like Welsh with VSO might be a good start since its a fairly rare syntax. Its also used by Arabic/Biblical Hebrew, Irish, Phillipino and Berber. I get a sense of old, magical, earthy and bit wild from it, a thoroughly bardic and oral language type, though with the Arabic/Hebrew it tends toward classical and written.

Hey peeps, what basic word order should I use in ancient-dwarrow (a proto-conlang from which all dwarf and dryad languages in my "fantasy setting with modern tech" setting are descended) use

Dropbox recently cut the number of devices we can have connected to our account so it was really time for us to find an alternative. I've been wanting to learn more about Nextcloud, but haven't set up my own server before, so getting a free acct from Spry was helpful. I still want to set up our own server, but this will give me time to learn how without the pressure of needing to get everything up and running.

I just got a free 10gb Nextcloud account from spryservers.net (in the US). Got the clients set up on my Kubuntu desktop and android phones and moved our dropbox files over to it. This involved adding a PPA (or snap app) on Ubuntu. I haven't got the calendar and contacts set up yet but so far it's pretty darn cool. Spouse can actually edit my novel on her phone with Collabora(Libre Office online) . If you've been thinking about ditching dropbox or google drive, this is one way to go!

@drewzero1 @ajroach42 I love recycling and keeping stuff in use and out of the landfill. Good job!

@ajroach42 Last week a customer called in about repairing a hand vacuum with worn-out built-in NiCad batteries. I checked with the manufacturer and they said they didn't sell replacement battery packs because it wouldn't be economical to repair.

Today the customer brought in the vacuum and some new NiCad packs he found online. They weren't exactly the same physically so I had to dremel the case a little, but it made me so happy to help someone stick it to the man like that.

@ajroach42 It's my birthday today! I rode my bike to eat birthday ramen with my spouse for dinner. I did some math and programming for fun, but slacked off on laundry.

Something that would really change my life as a FOSS dev is that people stop seeing FOSS as a finished product but instead as a best effort collective work by people that are [in position off] contributing for free on their free personal time on it and gave it to you for free [when this situation apply].

Like stop saying that "this is total shit" because you had bugs or because it wasn't top 100% perfect like you want for your super edge case that it wasn't designed for -_-
