MSP Social has implemented the following features that are not in the official Mastodon codebase:
Local-only toots
"Request an invitation" button
Described-image indicator icon
500 character bios
Minnesota-flavored error messages
There's more to do, but honestly I'm impressed we've gotten this much with a non-coder admin.
Thanks to the coders that have contributed code and github-expertise: @ecogeek @divergentdave @iangreenleaf @brandon @renatolond

Hey so did you know my work recently released this really neat tool for finding out quick demographic facts designed for easy use on phones called Abacus?
What % of people lacked health insurance in Illinois in 2017? Tap: Variables, Health Insurance, Back, Place, Illinois, Back, Time, 2017. Done.
How does that lack of coverage shake out if you only look at non-citizens? Tap: Subpopulation, Citizenship, check the boxes for non-citizen statuses. Done!
"This fund exists to fight health disparities experienced by LGBTQ people with an understanding that trans and other gender expansive people, youth, people of color, immigrants, people living with disabilities, and people experiencing homelessness face some of the largest health and financial disparities. The goal of the fund is to help patients get their health care costs reduced or covered at the clinic."
My grandfather died over two years ago; he sent letters to all his grandkids before he died. In mine he took time to do two things: tell me he didn't "agree with my lifestyle" and also thank me for teaching him Excel.
He left me some cash that I'm gonna use to fund a program to help trans people access medical care at one of the clinics in town here that does fiercely good work.
honestly though, mastodon instances are run and moderated by real people who care about the network, to the point of often paying their own money out-of-pocket to run their instances.
the *one* time i've had to report a post, my instance admin messaged me directly to let me know the action taken about it.
don't be shy to report. it works here. the rules aren't there just to keep things advertiser-friendly.
welcome to mastodon. don't be a dick. hug your local mods/admins.
I wonder, what's the queerest thing I could show 400 million people that wouldn't get rejected by the ad people https://mspsocial.net/media/FRzQRNGj_xGAiD-b2Ic
High Bridge in st paul is open again, yay!
The bike lanes aren't protected, boo!
Why would you spend so much effort to completely rebuild the deck and NOT protect the bike lanes? It's terrifying to ride with traffic next to a concrete wall. Every bike I saw today on it was on the pedestrian walkway, which, I absolutely don't blame them for choosing since the other option is a death trap lane.
Like, God, there's so much handwringing about how the fuck we're gonna recruit edgy white boys.
Quick question: why would we actively make organizing spaces more hostile to EVERYBODY ELSE to accommodate ~edgy~ boys who have never once ever expressed any interest in or capacity to be any help to anybody?
Why do I want someone who'll drive off 10 activists and needs constant babysitting?
They're drowning? Let them fucking drown.
