YouTube/Patreon frustrations

I sent out a message to YouTube subs this week about joining my Patreon, and I'm getting a bunch of flack for asking for help to make videos.

If a creator asks for help, don't give them crap about it. We live in a world that craves artistic presentation, but doesn't value it monetarily. Don't be surprised if/when your favorite creators ask for help.

Like, my most recent Linux Mint video took me about 25 hours to film and edit. YouTube is sending me probably $40-60 for the trouble.

I have to put food on the table, and I want to make stuff. That means I'll need help financially. I've rejected sponsors on Veronica Explains so far, but that won't last if folks get upset when I remind them I have a Patreon.

Just to be clear: I don't hate the idea of sponsorship either, and I don't feel like sponsorship is a bad thing (when done transparently).

I'd want to avoid any potential conflicts-of-interest with sponsorship, particularly around software that might be covered on the channel itself. That means I have a pretty high bar, and I'm proud of it. But that also means I leave a bit of money on the table.

Anyway, the thing I'm getting a bit of flack for is telling folks who've subscribed to me that I'll post a new video about my video editing workflow (a very popular request) once I reach 100 supporters. It's a transparent incentive, and I don't think it's outlandish considering it's a viewer request that'll take me some time to complete.

Am I wrong? I'm honestly open to feedback on that.

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc No, you're absolutely not wrong. I definitely don't mind you suggesting Patreon and frankly, it's pretty common for YT creators to do so. I'd much prefer Patreon solicitation than having to sit through more RayCon/NordVPN ads in the video on top of all of other YT ads.

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc As a subscriber and a Patreon supporter, I really don't mind the Patreon solicitations. I care more that you're able to make it as a content creator, since you produce good quality stuff and the Linux world needs more of that.

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vwbusguy I very much appreciate you!! :)

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc Do what you think is right. The flack will always be there regardless. I don't know how you identify the feedback that matters, but your input is way more important than the entire peanut gallery of complaints.
We watch because we like your taste and choices, and nobody sane will agree 100% anyway.

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc I believe you're acting in good intentions. It's a goal that both you and the viewers can celebrate from the milestone. I appreciate your honesty and it makes channels like yours all the more important.

re: YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc Sounds pretty standard to me? I know some people are annoyed at anyone asking for help or donations for something they don't pay for at all. It's a necessity in this horrid capitalist system we have.

re: YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@socketwench Like, I don't think I'm asking for much here- just that folks who enjoy my content consider helping me pay for it.

re: YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc
Some people will whine no matter what you do. And many will happily exploit you right to your death, while doing it. You can't base your choices on pleasing those people.

I like to use the word "sustainability" to talk about this issue. If you are not supporting your activities from those who consume them, then they are being subsidized from somewhere.

And as you point out, that comes with strings.
@socketwench

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc No, that's fine. You have quality content, takes me back to the old Chris Fisher CoderRadio etc. videos of a decade plus ago.

@vkc people want free stuff without paying for it (I know I do). To complain that people want to make money off of free stuff is just idiotic though.

Haters to the left!

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc No I don't think it's outrageous, but then again everyone has their own opinion.

BTW, Just bought a year of 'Terminal Nerditude' on Patreon with the money I would have spent at Starbucks during the Pandemic!

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@vkc Back in my sportswriting days I wrote an article about some labor dispute, I think it was the NHL. The usual critics were saying, "They're paid millions to play a game most of us would play for free!" And I remember responding that your typical weekend hockey player wouldn't last a week in a professional training regiment, much less a single game.

It's easy to criticize when you don't see the work that goes into the finished product.

YouTube/Patreon frustrations

@chronrevisited That's exactly it. Like, I could pound out videos each week with little editing and no b-roll, but I put a pretty high amount of work into these, and I think the final product speaks to that.
