for mastodon(dot)social users

Greetings, users of mastodon-dot-social!

I know you aren't all jerks or anything like that, but bad behavior from your instance *is* increasing.

You may find it to be beneficial to seek out a new instance, or create your own, in order to stay seen by the smaller instances.

for mastodon(dot)social users

My personal recommendation - and I will be putting this in a video shortly - is to seek out an instance that matches your interests. Or - perhaps even better - if you have a great local community instance, join it.

I fear users of mastodon-dot-social will have a less-than-stellar experience going forward as the smaller instances make decisions to simplify the workload from less-moderated sources.

for mastodon(dot)social users

If you do not have an instance in mind, ask folks who share a common interest with you what they think. Look around, and more importantly, ask around.

Word of mouth is extremely important, as it is in nearly all other areas of life!

for mastodon(dot)social users

Last thing- I know this stuff is challenging, weird, and different.

I don't know if it "needs" to be easier; that's a systemic question which is harder to peg down when you're dealing with individuals-not-corporations.

I'm not particularly concerned about it, as the Fediverse - much like Linux - benefits from the diversity of options and the collective security we gain from them.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc is it easy to move instances? do your toots/posts move over with you? mastdon(dot)social has been extremely slow for me I think just because of the amount of people joining

for mastodon(dot)social users

@MathesonStep @vkc your posts do not transfer, mostly for technical reasons.

Your followed accounts transfer, and anyone following your old account will automatically follow the new account.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc users at .social or .online will tend to have the genuine birdsite experience - too much noise and not nearly enough signal. Unfortunately it will also come with unnecessary slow server performance due to the backbone trying to support all the noise.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@RL_Dane @vkc omfg now I’m imagining an instance where every user is forced to follow U2

How dare this idea be spoken into the #fediverse

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc I feel like on top of that, the fediverse has been having a less than stellar experience with the drek that comes out of social and online. :blobnervous2:

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc That's exactly what prompted my post today: https://www.itsjustdj.com/its-okay-to-hate-mastodon.

People jump on mastodon.social too quickly before exploring more individualized instances.

@vkc Noted. I'll start looking for one, and see what I can find

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc Thanks for the heads up ma'am. It's much appreciated from us n00bs.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc You may already be planning on this, but it's probably worthwhile to address "what instance am I on, and how do I know?" as part of that. I've seen a couple of threads from admins warning that they're going to silence and/or block mastodon dot social (or journa), with floods of concerned toots from users on mastodon dot something else or something else dot social or even entirely unrelated domains, who don't know if they're going to get the ban hammer or not.

re: for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc I have questions about this in relationship to how instances relate with other instances (moderation). Instances can choose to mute/block other instances, as far as I understand. What tools are available for this moderation? A kind of white and black lists? Is there any way to aggregate information or partially "automate" the "scanning" of instances for efficient moderation by content?

re: for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc Could we get a Veronica Explains instance to gather the community from your channel?

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc is this why my federated feed has been quieter of late?

for mastodon(dot)social users

@flexsite Might be! You'd have to check with your instance admin to see if they've been taking steps to silence other sources- I can't speak for them!

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc I run my own instance through @mastohost and I haven't blocked that instance. I have blocked a few instances though.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@flexsite @mastohost aah, I see! Well, don't know what to tell you- maybe just service disruptions caused by the influx?

for mastodon(dot)social users

@flexsite @vkc @mastohost federated feed only shows you the public posts from any account anyone on your server follows. If you have a low user count, your federated feed will be slower.

@geotechland

@vkc
It wouldn't be so much adding *new* moderators as just ADDING moderators.
.social is probably the biggest single mod instance...

for mastodon(dot)social users

@mancavgeek @geotechland @vkc New moderators have been added, unfortunately there was an incident... https://twitter.com/triketora/status/1594348646396559361

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc What happened this time?

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc I fix those issues with a good strong filter set. I've been here for years, don't really want to migrate. As we said in my old BBS days of the 80's, "Ignore the trolls"

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc Smaller instances are blocking mastodon.social?

for mastodon(dot)social users

@glassbro @vkc they can/might because of a growing number of bad actors there and moderation taking time to take up on that. I guess better be prepared xD.

@vkc Sad to see that the official instance is going downhill compared to the others.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc I came here because I started on a small instance that effectively closed down. I decided I wanted to just go with the instance that seemed least likely to close up shop.

I’m on Mastodon because I want to (occasionally) talk to people. I’m definitely not interested in using the little time I spend on social media instance hopping. Does this seem like a problem to anyone else? I’ve been around for 2-3 years and already had to jump ship once.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc @RadDevon personality I am not-at-all concerned about who is on which instance and how often do you change one. But Veronica is correct about the fact that both the user and the themed instance benefit when that user joins one with shared interests. Like gamers coming to my gaming-themed instance, for example. I like this idea of smaller communities that both benefit from the local timeline and from the federation.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@darth @vkc Yeah, not disputing Veronica, and I agree with you in principle. I’m just a little worried about smaller instances because maintainers get bored with them… and now about larger instances because they get blocked when the wrong kind of people flood to them. Wish there were a “set it and forget it” option.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@RadDevon @vkc perhaps move to social.vivaldi.net ? They appear like one of the better choices, imo. To be truthful, I am one of those new instance admind and I recognise the challenge of not dropping the ball. It is NOT an easy job, overall. Not to mention that it costs money.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc I would if moving to a different instance was *actually* a feature that Mastodon offers, but it doesn’t. You have to create an entirely new account and the only thing that gets copied over is your followers, while all your previous posts get left behind on the old account.

for mastodon(dot)social users

@vkc the maintainer has added 4 new moderators. And it’s getting better.
